John and I decided to attend this year's TedFest because we'd missed TedFest '07, due to only learning about it at the last minute. We knew there'd be fun when emails from the organisers ended with 'Careful Now'. But just how much? Read on...

Translating a show from TV to stage is obviously a tricky business, and not something that should be done willy nilly. Could Mitchell and Webb, relative new comers to mainstream sketch comedy, make the transition as successfully as
The Fast Show or even, shudder,
Little Britain? I attended their final show of the tour at the Brixton Academy to find the hell out.

Following on from John's championing of the excellent Replay, another independent DVD production has come to my easily distracted attention. Now, excuse me while I play with this ball of string for a moment.

Not on until December, but what the hey, let's have a crack at them...
Best TV comedy actor
David Mitchell and Robert Webb - Peep Show (Channel 4)
Ricky Gervais - Extras (BBC Two)
Stephen Merchant - Extras (BBC Two)
Sorry, I'm confused. Why have Mitchell and Webb been nominated as a double act, but Merchant and Gervais separately? Whose bright idea was that? Well, anyway, this should definitely be the Peep Show pair. But it won't.

This weekend, James and myself attended the 10th London Movies, Comics and Media Expo at the Excel Centre in Docklands. Although the initial draw was the many comicbook and action figure stands urging us to part with our hard-earned money, just a few days prior to the event, we were delighted to discover that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost would be taking part in a Q & A session as part of the show's Hot Fuzz promotional presence. Although my memories of specific details are already quickly fading, I’ve done my best to transcribe some of the session’s more interesting points for your reading pleasure.

I rarely do things on a whim. I'm not a whimmy person. But when you happen to be walking along the street in Bath, and come across the beautiful Theatre Royal advertising a play starring Mel Smith, I had to go and book tickets there and then. I've never seen Mel Smith live before, and just to watch him do a big poo for an hour and a half would be a special thrill, let alone a rare theatre appearance. Belinda Lang was also exciting; me being a philistine/poor* (*delete as appropriate), I've never seen any of her West End performances, and simply know her from 2point4 Children - but a great sitcom performance is just as revealing as a great theatre one, and she's pretty damn wonderful. I was sold.

"...Appropriately enough for someone who takes heartbreak, loss and loneliness, then forgoes the self-pity to make them into something worth shouting about, the time spent performing to unfamiliar crowds with unfamiliar accents only appears to have improved his technique. If any artist can blow away the cobwebs of apathy, with pain that's as beautiful as it is biting, it's the man on stage, David Ford..."

Ah, Edinburgh. The one place I go to each year where I pretend to be cool, as I hang around the Pleasance, sipping a Diet Coke, reading Mac User in lieu of actually owning a Macbook, and spying on Steve Punt. But enough of my personal problems - onto the shows.
