Diagnosis: Slaughter

We flagged up House of the Dead: Overkill when it was announced a couple of months ago, but a further trailer has been released, and it’s looking very promising indeed. Showcasing the second level, Bayou County General Hospital, it looks like the comic Darkplace-style tone will be maintained throughout…

The series’ biggest failing since HotD 2 has been not making its levels distinct or interesting enough, but this trailer thankfully confirms that each stage will be in a radically different location.

Don’t ask me why but I’m annoyed that it is going to be on the Wii. Yes I know the Wii has the pointy controller, and even the nice light gun adapter thing, but the graphics will be a big let down. I’m not being shallow, because I don’t think graphics make a good game. Story, design and gameplay make a good game. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like the environments that I’m currently shitting my pants in to be rich with effective looking blood stains and a little bit of environment mapping on the shiny tiles.

I’m not even saying Wii games can’t look good. I thought that Mario Strikers was a beautiful looking game. I just don’t think this type of game is suited to the Wii.

I know I’m going to get moaned at now.

Normally, I’d agree with you, but HotD has never tried to be creepy, and the “point at screen” controller is too good a match to ignore. Remember, there’s no lightgun for the 360, and Sega are probably still too skint to make one. Samba didn’t get official maracas on the Wii…

I suppose. I mean I understand the pointer aspect of the Wii is appealing. It’s just sad that the first two games on the Saturn looked a hell of a lot better.

If they play well though who cares. If I can pick it up and a lightgun for cheap I think I will. It’s been far too long since I played a lightgun game at home.
