IT Crowd. Series 3. Tonight.

10:00pm on Channel 4. (Man, that’s too late. It’s really a 9pm show.)

Like the first show last year, I saw this one recorded - and no, it’s not as absolutely stunning as The Work Outing was. It is, however, a hugely entertaining half-hour of sitcom, with one of my favourite IT Crowd moments ever (see if you can guess it), and well worth tuning in for.

It’s interesting to note that the publicity photos for the series include Douglas - Linehan is now clearly classing Matt Berry as a full fourth cast member, equal to our three heroes. And I have to say, watching this series being recorded was when Douglas really clicked with me.

Watch out for our upcoming reviews of the entire series. I would be beholden to you.

Agree entirely about the 10pm broadcast time. Maybe they think people will still be at the pub at 9pm.

Lots of great moments - some of which are amongst my favourite bits of IT Crowd ever. But also some worrying stuff that I’m really not sure about when it comes to the direction of the series.

Full review on Monday.

Maybe they don’t want crushed by I’m a Has-Been, Get Me On Telly?

Maybe they didn’t want to clash with two of the BBC’s biggest comedy shows?

Good point. Still, I wish they could have put it on another day, or something, or waited a few weeks. I don’t think the show suits the 10pm slot. Especially as they presumably want it to become more of a mainstream hit.

It’s a shame it can’t be on at 8:30pm, but I suppose it’s just that tiny bit too rude. It’s nearly there, though - you wouldn’t have to change much!

I watched it on 4oD so timeslots bother me not. What two comedies did it compete with?

Have I Got News For You and Gavin & Stacey. I’m sure that was the cause of the slot rather than ITV’s show. Should been on 9pm on a different night, frankly…

What would you have to cut from Friday’s episode in order to get it an 8:30pm slot? Is it just the shits and pisses that are the problem? Could you possibly even get away with those on C4? Does any of the sexual stuff (“I had every last one of them”) cause a problem? The tone is very light, so hopefully you could get away with some things…

“…with one of my favourite IT Crowd moments ever (see if you can guess it)”

I’m guessing either the slap or the discovery of the gun.

(I thought it was a brilliant episode, btw)

It was the discovery of the gun, yeah. Fantastic.

I don’t think it’s an 8.30 show at all - in as much as Channel 4 doesn’t MAKE 8.30 sitcoms. It’d die in the schedule.

And even if it did, the perception of ‘cool’ comedy is post-watershed. Go out before 9 and you’re dismissed by - let’s face it - a large chunk of the IT Crowd’s target audience as bland family fare.

As to content, this week’s wasn’t problematic, I don’t think. The weeing stuff would have raised a taste question internally, saying shit and the bullet wound close-up might have had to go. (It’s nowhere near what Brittas got away with at 7.30, mind you, but times have changed.)

But the final episode of series two? Yeah, there’s no part of ‘wankered of rohypnol’ that’s going out before 9pm.

I think an 8:30pm family sitcom slot on C4 would be an interesting slot to try and create. But… well, with the problem of the audience not thinking it’s cool, I *really* hope you’re wrong about that, but I’ve got a nasty feeling you aren’t. (People really are bloody stupid.)

And yeah, the show does occasionally wander into areas that an 8:30pm slot isn’t quite suitable for. (See also: “You fucked up, Jen!” - I wouldn’t want to get rid of that for the world.)

Note that an 8:30pm Monday or Friday slot would go up against Soap. ITV shoving Soap up the 8:30pm Friday slot has directly led to the BBC cancelling After You’ve Gone, apparently, because that was AYG’s slot, it doesn’t think that slot is viable for comedy any more and it can’t see another place to put it. Or something.
