The Music of the Spheres

Silva Records has now made the Doctor Who Series 4 soundtrack available as a download, in advance of the CD release later this month.

There’s more than enough reason to fork out the eight quid entry fee, with the choral version of “Strange, Strange Creatures” from Silence in the Library being worth the asking price on its own. As a package, however, it’s more than a little lazy. The main theme is only available in its opening and closing versions, both with a running time of about a minute, as opposed to the extended version of the series two mix found on the first OST. Gold also opts to present the Voyage of the Damned score as a ten minute suite, instead of picking out any actual pieces.

God, “All The Strange, Strange Creatures” still sends a shiver down my spine. Best piece of New Who music, by miles. It seems to just sum up the entire show perfectly.

(although there are plenty that almost manage it. I still love “Westminster Bridge” and “Doomsday”, “This Is Gallifrey…” is magical, and the “Song of Freedom” was a real standout from s4…)

“This Is Gallifrey…” is my favourite.
