Man, 26, Listens to Every Album on iPod. World Yawns.

Hello. I thought I’d just do a quick bit of shameless pluggery for a project that I’m running for the duration of 2009 over on my LiveJournal (well, at least, for as long as LJ is still up and running, there being question marks over that as of today). I’m planning to listen to every album stored on my iPod (around 350-odd when I’ve stripped out certain exceptions) in sequence (alphabetical by album title) and write between 50-200 words on each one. If you’re interested, you can follow my progress via this helpful tag link, which saves you having to venture anywhere near my usual other witless ramblings!

You have a LiveJournal? And LJ might not be around for long?

Well, poop. And here I just got mine all set up a coupla months back. (Of course, I seldom use it, but still.) Would you mind too much if I friended you anyway? I’m Satan’s Onion over there.

Meg : add away!

Capps and Marleen : Yes, I’ve got an iPod. Show me another large-capacity portable jukebox player that is actually Good and doesn’t cost ludicrous amounts of money (if I had more to spend, I’d have got a video Archos or something, but they don’t make proper music-only players any more), and I’d have got one. Apple, much as I hate them, have battered the market into submission - they’re the only people making decent players of 20GB and over capacity. Ergo, I’ve got a 120GB classic. Also, the current generation is the first time I’ve actually liked (a) the look of the things, the charcoal one is lovely; and (b) the interface, especially CoverFlow, which is GRATE.

You are correct, of course. I’m in the advantageous position of having a wonderful old iRiver from five years ago which is still serving me well, but the current MP3 player market *is* a complete bloody shambles. I don’t understand why Archos don’t offer a paired down music player with a massive hard drive.

I can’t really vouch for Archos. I got a 40GB Wifi one in Christmas 2007 and it bit the dust the other day. Quite common error apparently.

Creative can be a bit iffy with hard-drives but I’m pretty happy with my 32GB Zen. Shame they’re not doing too well these as they were adequate competition for Apple.

I have a Nano as well (I got it free through work) but the capacity is too small to make it worthwhile. The interface is far nicer, mind.

Statements like this irk me. Why? Because you actually have to put a bit of thought into what you want to listen too?

I understand the appeal of carrying your entire music collection around with you, but statements like that seem to imply that there was something wrong with the old way of doing things - which there wasn’t. It had the benefit of lending itself to putting the time and effort into mixtapes or later mix CDs which could be a hugely enjoyable experience, okay it’s not to everyone’s tastes and I’m sounding like an old fart…but oh I don’t know I’ve lost my way in this rant.

I get what’s meant, though - the device has to suit your temperament. I’m aghast at Seb’s love for coverflow when it’s something I never use at all…presumably because I’m a ‘playlists and tracks’ listener much more than an albums guy.

When my massively old Photo iPod finally died, I had to replace it immediately. I was gifted an iPod Touch last year, but I knew it wouldn’t be enough. I didn’t need the replacement any time soon, and I didn’t really have the cash, but the Touch doesn’t hold as much as I feel I need.

If I was used to a Shuffle, I’d have been fine. But once you’ve gone Classic, it’s hard to accept anything else.

Sorry for the irk. And your assumption is completely correct. I don’t want to put any thought into what I want to listen to. I want to hit “Random Play All” and get an extremely varied selection, rather than being limited to tracks from a relatively small number of albums.

>Really? Oh dear. What happened?

The ominous error 102 where you’re presented with three options: “Continue”, “Repair” and “Format”, and all of them do the same thing: Reboot and present you with the same options.

Ignoring the fact that it’s a month out of warranty, it’s been sitting in its cradle for the last 3/4 months streaming stuff from my PC so it certainly hasn’t been dropped or damaged.

Yes sorry. It wasn’t really aimed at you Pete. Tiredness and general frustration preceeded launching into a rant I hadn’t entirely thought through.
