Lily Allen - Smile

I actually quite like this song, despite it being not-my-cup-of-tea-at-all on paper. And I find Lily strangely sexy, despite her dressing like a chav. And I don't even mind that she's Keith Allen's daughter. What's going on?

About this entry

Comments

All of my Trendy London Mates have been banging on about her for ages, and her album gets five stars in the Guardian today (they say she's not a female Streets, she's much better than that). Apparently her Myspace is brilliant.

I'll probably check out the album, but she sounds like the sort of thing that works better as a Trendy Secret than a Nation's Darling...

I like the fact that the lyrics are sung so nicely, despite them being rather nasty. You can defintely tell that she's Keith's daughter from the general attitude of her, but that's not necessarily a bad thing: we need someone to break up the blandness.

Kevin was always more talented than Keith, anyway...

I quite like the humour of LDN but I got the album a while ago off the back of that one song and I wasn't that impressed. Lyrically, she's in the same league as the Arctic Monkeys, in that they both make prosaic things sound poetic, but by the same token a lot of the lines sound like they've been hacked up and forced into the music so that she can fit in a dodgy rhyme. I would hesitate use the words "novelty act" because she's clearly liked by a lot of people, but I it comes over a bit gimmicky to me (and yeah, "Female Streets" is an often-used and not entirely unfair description of that gimmick).

It's not a bad song (thanks to the old-fashioned influences) but the way she pronounces 'men'al healf' is the only way she'll sell records by speaking to the chav masses. I suppose it IS like the Monkeys in a way. His accent and the supposed 'attitude' is what sells it. However, the Monkeys' album is pretty good.

Keith Allen is gonna be chewing some scenery as the Sheriff in Robin Hood. That's one I'm looking forward to.

Couldn't care less about the song, even if does smack of "Daddy bought me a record contract". The video on the other hand is just unbelievably unpleasant, though. I caught it on TOTP a few nights ago and just thought "fucking hell".

I gather the "plot" is that she is getting revenge on the subject of the song by paying some yoofs to beat him up and take his wallet(which she proceeds to pocket). While the same yoofs proceed to wreck his flat, she takes the battered bloke out for a cup of tea which she then spikes with laxatives. HILARIOUS.

I don't think it's necessarily a recommendation on how to live your life, y'know. After all, I don't think Morrissey was really condoning stalkers with "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get". However, seeing as she accuses him of affecting her mental health, he hardly seems like an upstanding citizen. As I've said, I'd much rather see her than a lot of the other bland acts in pop nowadays.

I don't even like the song *that* much... :)

You know what, I think you heard correctly. She has a refeshing honesty.
