Big Brother News

I've found it really hard to give a shit about this series of Big Brother at all - by the end of the first fortnight, I was so bored I wanted to die, and every time I bothered to tune in after that I didn't recognise half of the people onscreen. None of them really were interesting enough to stand out from the endless arguments about hair straighteners or more frequently about *nothing at all* between Charley, the vile, malicious "star" of BB8 and you know, everyone else. I've always taken issue with people who go "YEAH BUT BIG BROTHER IS SOO BORING" because the social interaction in a large group of people under stressful situations is one of the most obviously compelling things you could possibly have a television show about, but the incessant focus this year on that sniping, fame-hungry bastard completely scuppered my enjoyment of the show. However, she's gone now, and I've tentatively started watching again, and I have a few questions for anyone who has been watching the whole time.

1. Why was everyone booing like lunatics at David? I quite liked David.

2. Does anyone else understand anything Ziggy says? Like, anything? Whenever he starts talking, any actual *point* is lost underneath a mountain of sports-commentator waffle and transparent attempts to paint himself as an all-round great guy. Is it raining, Ziggy? Well, the thing about rain, it's a game of two halves, sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't, but the important thing is to be true to who you are and I think I've done that in here, I really do. YES BUT IS IT RAINING? YOU MASSIVE PRICK.

3. Not a question, but I take back everything I said about the twins. They are lovely, and the shot of them holding hands after Chanelle left brought a tear to my eye (I was very pissed, mind).

4. Why all the cheering for Tracey? What does she do, apart from look like a brass doorknocker that came to life and follow The Levellers round on tour?

5. Does Carole strike anyone else as a manipulative gypsy with a streak of intellectual snobbery she can't really justify?

I tend to agree with all of your points, Michael, so can't really help you out any more, although I do find the twins irritating at times. My pet peeve is someone without an opinion, because you can't really have any kind of serious conversation. They seem nice enough, though.

I didn't watch much of David, so from the eviction show, I think he did some kind of odd turn-around that the viewers didn't like. You could argue that David showing more than one side of himself scared most BB viewers, I suppose. At least he was interesting, unlike most of the housemates. Gerry is the only other housemate I really like.

Yes, Ziggy is a complete twat. I would like very much for him to be booed on his exit as a consequence of his attempts to manipulate the public's opinion of him. I was no fan of Chanelle, but he was a complete cunt to her, which I didn't think she deserved.

1. I liked David, too. I genuinely think the lowest-common-denom reaction is 'He's weird and has certain sexuality!' A gamp gay man is fine, it's ambiguity they don't like.

2. Yeah, this is the thing with Ziggy - he's crazy-making. Channelle was bonkers anyway, but dating that guy is enough to push anyone over the edge. Passive-aggressive, vague git.

3. I wish Brian would cop off with Amanda, just to give the twins something to do other than giggle or feel sad. They're fine, just a bit one-note. Speaking of which...

4. Tracey's not actually popular, is she? She was just the one familiar face among this week's nominees. She's like a Little Britain character - they're not sure she's actualy any good, but at least they can quote the catchphrases.

5. Yes.

Jeez, welcome to typo city...

"UNcertain sexuality" obviously. And that would be "camp".

Actually, I think I prefer 'gamp'. Anyway, I agree with you as well.

By the way, Michael, your description of Tracey was fantastic. Worthy of Grace Dent, it was.

Why, thankyou. I'd write another one of these but it's a really hard series to say anything about, isn't it? There's probably a very interesting article to be written about Carole (has any housemate oover 35 ever lasted this long before? I can't think of one) but I'm fucked if I can be arsed writing it. Ziggy is growing on me a little bit - I still want to blow my own brains out when he starts finishing sentences for people (I don't think Brian has ever finished one of his own sentences in a conversation with Ziggy) but he doesn't seem AS worried about how he's coming across in the outside world as he was when he was with Chanelle, and I suspect he's a fairly decent chap on some fundamental level.
